The local thoroughbred season opened today, one week after our province's interior horsemen got their own dusty circuit off to a start. Sonja and I joined the biggest opening day crowd I have ever seen. There was not much traditional media advertising so I am guessing the track put the word out, successfully, via gizmo media.
It was mostly sunny but cold as beer because of a strong wind. Everybody was dressed for it except for one beer drinking young woman who was dressed in a beach outfit. She was all goose bumps and nipples. I asked her, "Aren't you cold?"
"Oh no," she told me. "I'm from motherfucking Alberta. I haven't been this warm since last September."
