Canadian Country Schoolhouse

One of the things I like about the area I live in is the small country schoolhouses that still exist. The fucking government is slowly tearing them down of course. Nothing good lasts once a government can make decisions about it.

Nothing.

Today I let the Hammer run around the grounds of one such school. Unlike most schools there was no sign telling my dog to get off the fucking grass for me to ignore. The sign only asked that I pick up her pooh. The field was big; the school was small; a Canadian flag played in the warm breeze.

God damn it, it was peaceful.

The Hammer shit, I picked it up and the Hammer had a happy post-shit run on the yielding turf. One day we will return. On our way back to the car I deposited my dog's crap in the big, rusty, stinky, locked garbage box at the edge of the small parking lot, pushing up on the lid just far enough to squeeze the warm soft package inside.

I only ever went to one school near that one's size. Everyone knew each other and even if we did not all get along, we wished each other no harm. Nowadays schools are too fucking big. Motherfucking prisons. No wonder our children could not give a flying fuck about one another.

The last one room schoolhouse in California is not far from here. It's a public school but so many people want to send their kids to it that it has an exclusive reputation.

There are a handful of one room school houses still operating in B.C. None have waiting lists that I know of. They are in remote locations like Quatsino.
