Polar Blue

Got a chance to talk to the trainer and owner of Polar Blue when I was up at the big one day thoroughbred meeting Sunflower Downs hosts each summer. A big man by the name of Lenny. Sounded like he had brought his horse down to Sunflower Downs to escape the thousands of drunken softball hooligans that were invading his home town that weekend. "Just about everybody gets the fuck out of town when those gin pig motherfuckers invade." Polar Blue, a big grey, looked great, if a little rangy-tangy that day. I did not bet him or the eventual winner of that race but I put his name in my long shot book. Horses that can transfer their winning ability from the bush tracks up in Frootloops and the Vernon Ring of Fire are hard to come by.

Lenny brought Polar Blue down to Dope City Downs a month ago where he ran ok for a fifth place finish on a wet track, a surface condition he has yet to win on. I held off betting the horse that day. Today Polar Blue showed up for his last run of the season against a group of questionable opponents. He left the gate at odds of 15-1 and won his race by a couple lengths. My money was on his nose.

Nice weekend that was.

15-1 sounds like a nice return.

Square Eddie, an Ontario bred son of Smart Strike, who I backed with my hard earned sawbucks, placed in Juvenile. I don't mind the new racing surface at Santa Anita, the prevailing bias compares favourably to my local track.
